Austria 2025 Provincial Trade Data: Exports Down in Five Provinces, Imports Up in Seven - News and Statistics

According to preliminary data from Statistics Austria, five of Austria‘s nine federal provinces recorded lower export values in 2025 compared to the previous year, while seven provinces saw import increases. The data, released on July 15, 2026, shows that Carinthia, Salzburg, Tyrol, and Vorarlberg posted higher values in both trade directions year-on-year, whereas other provinces experienced export declines.

Export Declines and Gains

Burgenland registered the steepest percentage drop in exports, followed by Vienna, Upper Austria, Lower Austria, and Styria. On the positive side, Tyrol, Carinthia, Salzburg, and Vorarlberg recorded export growth. Upper Austria remained the country’s leading export province and posted the largest trade surplus.

Import Trends

On the import side, Tyrol saw the strongest relative increase, while Vienna recorded the largest absolute rise. Only Burgenland and Upper Austria reported declines in imports.

Trade Balances and Provincial Shares

Five federal provinces achieved a trade surplus in 2025. Upper Austria had the highest surplus, followed by Styria and Vorarlberg. Upper Austria accounted for nearly a quarter of Austrian goods exports. Vienna held the second-highest export value and the highest import share, resulting in the largest trade deficit.

Key Commodity Groups

In most provinces, machinery, boilers, and mechanical appliances were the most important commodity group for both imports and exports. In Vienna, pharmaceutical products dominated both trade flows. In Tyrol, pharmaceutical products also led exports. Mineral fuels were the top import in Lower Austria.

Notable percentage changes included a rise in Tyrolean imports of organic chemicals and pharmaceutical products, a jump in Vienna’s exports of pearls, precious stones, and precious metals, an increase in Burgenland’s imports of mineral fuels and mineral oils, and growth in Tyrol’s exports of copper and articles thereof.

Trading Partners

Germany remained the most significant trading partner for all Austrian provinces in 2025. Exports to Germany from Upper Austria, the province with the highest export volume there, edged lower. Imports from Germany rose in Vienna and Salzburg but fell in Burgenland and Styria. In Tyrol, imports from Switzerland increased markedly, making it the province’s second most important import partner.
