Australia posted its first trade shortfall since the final three months of 2017, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reported on Tuesday. The nation’s current account balance swung to a negative $27.1 billion in the three months to March 2026, based on seasonally adjusted current-price figures.
Export weakness and import strength
Jonathon Khoo, the ABS’s head of international statistics, noted that the merchandise and services trade balance turned negative for the first time in over eight years, driven by lower shipments of mining resources and higher purchases of data-centre gear and energy products. Overall exports of goods and services slipped 1.2 percent in the March quarter, with goods alone dropping by the same margin. Iron ore and coal were the main contributors to the decline in mining exports. Iron ore prices fell markedly, while shipments of both commodities were hampered by cyclones Koji and Mitchell.
Services exports contracted 1.3 percent, led by a drop in education-related travel as fewer international students arrived. On the other side, imports of goods and services climbed 0.8 percent, propelled by a 1.5 percent rise in goods. ADP equipment, along with fuels and lubricants, were the key drivers. Imports of ADP equipment hit record levels, spurred by large-scale purchases of AI server racks amid ongoing data-centre construction in New South Wales and Victoria. Prices for crude oil and refined petroleum products jumped significantly after the Strait of Hormuz closure pushed oil costs higher and tightened global availability.
Gold and income flows
Both exports and imports of non-monetary gold advanced, rising 23.7 percent and 12.9 percent respectively. Gold values continued to set new highs, marking the tenth consecutive quarterly increase for both trade flows. The net primary income balance narrowed by $0.4 billion to a deficit of $23.7 billion. This decline was driven by a $1.2 billion rise in primary income debits, or outflows, which reached $52.4 billion, reflecting higher earnings by foreign-owned firms operating in Australia. Mining companies under foreign ownership posted stronger profits in the quarter due to rising gold prices, with those profits repatriated to overseas owners and shareholders. Partially offsetting this was a $0.8 billion increase in primary income credits, or inflows, to $28.7 billion, as Australian companies’ overseas subsidiaries earned more from elevated global commodity prices.
Australia’s net international investment position expanded by $62.3 billion to a net liability of $707.6 billion. This shift was largely due to an $85.3 billion decline in the net foreign equity asset position, stemming from weaker equity markets abroad and a firmer Australian dollar. Turbulence in overseas stock markets and currency fluctuations linked to the Middle East conflict reduced the value of Australian superannuation holdings in foreign equities. That factor, combined with robust demand from international investors for Australian debt, pushed the nation’s investment position to its highest liability level since December 2023.
Financial account and GDP implications
The financial account posted a surplus of $18.9 billion, supported by net debt inflows of $11.2 billion and net equity inflows of $7.7 billion. The $5.2 billion contraction in net trade, measured in chain-volume terms on a seasonally adjusted basis, is projected to subtract 0.8 percentage points from the March quarter 2026 gross domestic product reading. The ABS will release the full national accounts for the March quarter on 3 June 2026.
