Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD is taking initial steps to double production capacity at its Brazilian plant to 600,000 vehicles a year. The company is entering the final stages of construction and testing at the facility, including its stamping, welding and painting shops.
With operations expected to begin in 2027, BYD’s plant will seek to exceed the requirement for 50% locally sourced components, which would not only satisfy regulatory standards but also help the company begin regional exports, according to Alexandre Baldy, the company’s senior vice president.
BYD has already invested more than R$5.5 billion in the new plant, which employs about 9,000 people and expects to increase its workforce to 10,000 by the end of the year.
Baldy noted that demand for the company’s electric vehicles, running at around 30,000 units per month, already exceeds current production capacity. The automaker is preparing to fulfill orders for 50,000 vehicles from Mexico and Argentina starting next year. Since its inauguration, the factory has recorded cumulative sales of 200,000 cars in 2026, reaching an 8.5% market share in Brazil.
