The foreign trade volume indicator measures changes in the actual quantities of goods exported and imported, excluding the effects of price fluctuations, Destatis said in a press release.
Germany’s foreign trade volumes improved in April 2026, with exports rising 4.8 per cent and imports up 2.8 per cent YoY.
The increase reflects higher quantities of goods traded rather than price effects.
Despite the gains, trade volumes remain below 2019 pre-crisis levels, indicating that Germany’s external trade recovery is continuing but has not yet fully returned to earlier benchmarks.
The statistical agency further said that the increase in April indicates stronger trade flows compared to the same month last year. However, Germany’s foreign trade volume remains below the level recorded in 2019 before a series of economic disruptions affected global trade patterns.
A comparison with nominal foreign trade data shows a different picture. In value terms, Germany’s exports were 3.7 per cent higher in April 2026 than in April 2025, while imports rose by 6.3 per cent YoY.
