A new set of switching widgets promises to transfer personal ‘memories’ and full chat histories into Gemini, speeding up user migration without starting from scratch.
Against the competition for user attention in the chatbot market, leading platforms are vying to broaden their audience. Google has taken another step, introducing switching tools – new widgets that allow transferring data from other chatbots directly into Gemini.
According to the company, these tools provide the ability to transfer so-called ‘memories’ (fragments of personal information) and even full chat histories along with the key advantages, interactions, and personal context.
The aim of these tools is to significantly simplify the switch to Google Gemini: users won’t have to spend much time relearning or configuring what they want.
«After importing these memories, Gemini will understand the same key facts you shared with other apps, for example your interests, your brother’s or sister’s name, or the place where you grew up. Instead of starting from scratch, you will quickly bring Gemini up to speed on what matters most to you.»
Transferring Chat Histories and Their Capabilities
As for importing chat histories, Google says all you need to do is upload them into a ZIP archive. Exporting logs via ZIP files from most chatbots – including ChatGPT and Claude – lets users seamlessly pick up where they left off.
«This enables users to seamlessly continue from where they left off.»
In addition, the company notes that users will also be able to search among these old chats and quickly locate the dialog or link they need.
Globally, OpenAI’s ChatGPT remains the leader among consumer chatbots: last month the company announced 900 million weekly active users.
Gemini, despite Google’s broad distribution – notably due to its native presence on Android devices and in the Chrome browser – had previously lagged in recognizability among users.
Last month Alphabet released quarterly data: Gemini surpassed 750 million monthly active users. This move signals Google’s intent to catch up with the competitor.
All told, Google aims to strengthen Gemini’s position by giving users the ability to transfer data from other chatbots, ensuring transitions between services are as smooth as possible.
In the future, such updates will make Gemini even more convenient for users who already have histories of interactions with other chatbots, enabling seamless work with different services within a single ecosystem.
