India has overtaken China to become the largest supplier of cotton products, including apparel and home textiles, to the United States in 2025, according to the latest Cotton: World Markets and Trade report published by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The report provides a detailed account of global cotton product trade and shows significant changes in supplier rankings for the US market.
According to the USDA, total US imports of cotton products in 2025 were approximately 3.3 million metric tons. Of this total, India supplied around 0.6 million tons, slightly surpassing China’s estimated 0.5 million tons, making India the top supplier by volume. Other countries, including Bangladesh, Vietnam, Pakistan, Mexico, and Cambodia, also contributed to US imports but remained below India in terms of total shipments.
India’s vertically integrated textile sector, spanning raw cotton processing, spinning, weaving, garment production, and finished home textiles, is cited as a factor supporting its ability to supply large volumes to the US market. The country also benefits from a strong domestic cotton cultivation base, export infrastructure, and logistics networks that enable the timely delivery of goods.
The report indicates that supplier shares were affected by sourcing strategies adopted by US importers. While India’s shipments increased, China’s share declined compared with previous years. This change is documented across multiple product categories, reflecting broader adjustments in global cotton trade flows.
In addition to India and China, the USDA report notes that other exporters, including Bangladesh, Vietnam, Pakistan, Mexico, and Cambodia, contributed substantial quantities of cotton apparel and home textiles. These suppliers maintained or slightly increased their shares in the US market during 2025.
The USDA’s analysis provides a factual overview of global cotton product trade, detailing shipment volumes, product categories, and shifts in supplier rankings. The data demonstrates India’s expanded role in supplying cotton products to the United States and highlights changes in international supply patterns in 2025.
Overall, the USDA report documents that India supplied the largest volume of cotton-based goods to the US in 2025, displacing China and reflecting adjustments in global trade flows, product sourcing, and export capacity across multiple countries.
