South Africa Enforces Steel Import Duties: 74.98% on China, 20.32% on Thailand - News and Statistics

South Africa has implemented definitive anti-dumping duties on structural steel imports from China and Thailand, according to a report from Business Insider Africa. The duties are set at 74.98 percent for Chinese steel and 20.32 percent for Thai steel, and these rates are scheduled to be in force for a five-year period.

The decision follows an investigation by South Africa’s International Trade Affairs Committee, which concluded that imports from these nations were priced below market value and were injuring local manufacturers. This action follows provisional duties that were applied in 2024, which were set at lower rates.

The domestic steel sector has been facing challenges from low local demand and significant volumes of inexpensive imported material. This situation has led some major producers to initiate temporary shutdowns at certain facilities. Imports constitute over a third of the country’s total steel consumption, with China being the source for the majority of those imports.

The new measures are anticipated to assist local companies in recovering market share, supporting price stability, and enabling investment in production and jobs. In a related development, Brazil also enacted its own five-year anti-dumping duties on certain Chinese steel products earlier this year.
